Trump Extends Iran Ceasefire Amid Diplomatic Push, Maintains Naval Blockade
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the extension of the ceasefire with Iran, giving Tehran more time to negotiate while maintaining a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Extends Iran Ceasefire Amid Diplomatic Efforts
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday the extension of the ceasefire with Iran, providing Tehran additional time to present a unified proposal while maintaining a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. The decision was made in light of internal divisions within the Iranian government and at the request of Pakistan, a key mediator in the conflict.
Speaking on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated he had decided to "extend the ceasefire until Iran presents a proposal and discussions are concluded, one way or another." He emphasized that U.S. armed forces would continue to enforce the naval blockade despite the ceasefire extension.
The announcement comes amid confusion over the ceasefire's expiration date, with Washington citing Wednesday evening (local time) and Tehran claiming it ended Tuesday at midnight GMT. The extension has also delayed Vice President JD Vance's planned trip to Pakistan, where he was expected to lead further negotiations with Iranian officials.
A senior U.S. official confirmed that the vice president's visit would not occur Tuesday, stating: "In light of President Trump's message on Truth Social, confirming that the United States awaits a unified proposal from the Iranians, the trip to Pakistan will not take place today."
Nearly two months into the conflict initiated by Israel and the United States, Iran has threatened to resume strikes against Gulf countries, potentially jeopardizing global oil supplies. The situation remains tense as diplomatic efforts continue to prevent further escalation in the Middle East.
