South Korea's Nominal GDP Surges 26.4% Year-on-Year, Hitting 47-Year High on AI Boom

South Korea's economy has posted its strongest nominal GDP growth in nearly five decades, according to preliminary data from the Bank of Korea. The nation's nominal GDP expanded by an impressive 26.4% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, marking the highest annual increase since Q3 1979. This exceptional performance was driven primarily by robust exports in artificial intelligence-related technologies and semiconductors, signaling South Korea's pivotal role in the global AI revolution.

South Korea has delivered a stunning economic performance in the second quarter of 2026, with nominal GDP figures reaching levels not seen in 47 years. The Bank of Korea (BOK) released preliminary data on Tuesday showing that the country's nominal GDP surged by 26.4% year-on-year during the three months ending in June, the strongest annual growth since the third quarter of 1979 when it hit 27.7%.

Quarterly Growth Reaches 9.2%

On a quarterly basis, nominal GDP jumped 9.2%, demonstrating remarkable momentum in the Korean economy. This performance has been largely attributed to booming exports in artificial intelligence technologies and semiconductor products, sectors where South Korea has established global leadership.

Real GDP Shows Steady Growth

While nominal figures captured headlines, real GDP growth presented a more moderate but still healthy picture. Real GDP increased by 0.6% quarter-on-quarter and 3.7% year-on-year, a slight deceleration from the 3.8% recorded in the first quarter of 2026. These figures matched the BOK's advance estimate published in late July, with the central bank making minor adjustments—revising construction and intellectual property investment estimates up by 0.1 percentage points while reducing public consumption by the same margin.

Export Sector Drives Economic Expansion

The export sector proved to be a key growth driver, expanding 1.3% during the quarter. Semiconductors and capital goods led the charge, reflecting strong global demand for Korean technology products. Imports grew at a slower pace of 0.7%, contributing to a favorable trade balance.

National Income Hits Record Territory

Perhaps even more impressive was the performance of gross national income (GNI). Real GNI surged 3.1% quarter-on-quarter and an extraordinary 15.6% year-on-year, marking the strongest annual increase since Q4 1988 when it reached 15.7%. The BOK projects that per capita GNI will hit the $40,000 threshold in 2026, barring any unexpected external shocks—a significant milestone for the Korean economy.

This robust economic data underscores South Korea's strategic positioning in the global AI and semiconductor supply chains, sectors that continue to experience explosive growth as digital transformation accelerates worldwide.
