Morocco's financial regulators and business leaders are launching a strategic push to make capital markets more accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises, signaling a significant shift in how the country's businesses can fuel their growth.
The Moroccan Capital Markets Authority (AMMC) and the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) co-hosted a major conference in Casablanca focused on "Capital Markets and SME Financing," bringing together corporate executives, institutional investors, market operators, and professional associations.
Building the Pipeline for Market-Ready Companies
CGEM President Mehdi Tazi highlighted the long-term nature of preparing companies for public markets. "Our collective challenge is to develop a genuine pipeline of companies capable of accessing capital markets," Tazi stated. "A stock market listing requires years of preparation: it means structuring the company, strengthening governance and management, and maintaining reliable financial information. Our ambition must be to build this pathway and guide more SMEs toward the standards that will enable them to scale up."
Deepening Market Proximity to Real Economy
AMMC President Tarik Senhaji emphasized the need to enhance the capital market's capacity to support the transformation of Morocco's economy. He acknowledged the progress made in recent years that has deepened the market and expanded the range of financing solutions available.
Senhaji noted that while the market has gained depth, it must now gain proximity. He encouraged capital market participants to engage more directly with companies, better understand their growth trajectories, and intervene earlier in their projects. "Solutions should originate from financing needs, not merely from available instruments," he emphasized.
Two-Panel Discussion on Access and Preparation
The conference featured two panel discussions examining SME financing through capital markets and how to prepare companies for market access. Drawing on successful case studies, participants demonstrated that the market offers adapted, agile, and diversified financing solutions. The key challenge identified was providing adequate support to enable more companies to utilize these options.
Shared Vision for Economic Development
Through this joint initiative, the AMMC and CGEM reaffirmed their common ambition to expand capital market usage, strengthen its connection to the real economy, and increase its capacity to transform national savings into concrete financing for the Kingdom's productive sector.
The conference underscores Morocco's commitment to diversifying corporate financing beyond traditional banking channels and creating a more robust ecosystem for business growth and job creation.
