Five Moroccan Regions Account for Over 74% of Household Final Consumption Spending in 2024

The High Commission for Planning (HCP) released the 2024 regional accounts on Monday, showing that five regions captured almost three‑quarters of Morocco’s household final consumption expenditure (HFCE). Casablanca‑Settat alone contributed 25.3% of the national total, followed by Rabat‑Salé‑Kénitra, Tanger‑Tétouan‑Al Hoceima, Fès‑Meknès and Marrakech‑Safi. The data also reveal a widening gap between regions, with per‑capita consumption rising in the top‑performing areas while overall disparity increases.

Key Findings from the 2024 Regional Accounts

The High Commission for Planning (HCP) released the latest regional accounts for 2024, highlighting a strong concentration of household final consumption expenditure (HFCE) in a handful of Moroccan regions.

Top Five Regions Drive More Than Three‑Quarters of HFCE

  • Casablanca‑Settat: 25.3% of national HFCE
  • Rabat‑Salé‑Kénitra: 14.8%
  • Tanger‑Tétouan‑Al Hoceima: 11.6%
  • Fès‑Meknès: 11.4%
  • Marrakech‑Safi: 11.3%

Collectively, these five regions accounted for 74.4% of the country’s total household consumption of 944.1 billion dirhams in 2024.

Other Regions Share the Remaining Quarter

The remaining 12 regions together contributed 25.6% of HFCE, with shares ranging from a low of 0.8% in Dakhla‑Oued‑Eddahab to a high of 7.2% in Souss‑Massa.

Per‑Capita Consumption Highlights

At the national level, HFCE per inhabitant stood at 25,664 DH in 2024. Six regions exceeded this average:

  • Dakhla‑Oued‑Eddahab – 34,515 DH
  • Casablanca‑Settat – 31,173 DH
  • Oriental – 27,805 DH
  • Rabat‑Salé‑Kénitra – 27,250 DH
  • Tanger‑Tétouan‑Al Hoceima – 27,210 DH
  • Laâyoune‑Sakia El Hamra – 25,696 DH

Growing Disparities

The average absolute gap between regional HFCE and the regional average widened to 51.5 billion dirhams in 2024, up from 48.5 billion in 2023, signalling increasing concentration of consumption in the most dynamic regions.

Similarly, the average absolute dispersion of per‑capita consumption rose from 3,423 DH in 2023 to 3,609 DH in 2024.

Implications

These figures underline the regional imbalance in purchasing power and suggest that policy focus may need to shift toward less‑developed regions to narrow the consumption gap.
