Banque Centrale Populaire Group demonstrated solid operational momentum in the first half of 2026, with customer deposits surging 9% and loan portfolios expanding 5.7%. Banque Centrale Populaire Group has released its first-half 2026 financial results, revealing a picture of operational strength tempered by market headwinds. The Moroccan banking giant showcased impressive growth in its fundamental banking metrics, though overall profitability indicators reflected challenging capital market conditions.

Strong Commercial Performance Drives Balance Sheet Expansion

The bank's core commercial activities demonstrated robust momentum throughout the period. Gross customer loans reached MAD 337.5 billion by the end of June 2026, compared to MAD 319.2 billion in the same period last year—a substantial 5.7% year-over-year increase that signals healthy lending appetite and economic activity.

Even more impressive was the bank's deposit gathering capability. Customer deposits climbed to MAD 429.5 billion, representing a significant 9% jump from the MAD 393.9 billion recorded at the end of June 2025. This outpaced loan growth suggests strengthening customer confidence and improving liquidity positions across the bank's client base.

Core Banking Revenues Show Healthy Growth

The strength in traditional banking operations translated directly into revenue generation. Interest margin income advanced 5.9% to reach MAD 7.9 billion, reflecting both volume growth and pricing discipline in the lending business. Meanwhile, fee and commission income proved equally dynamic, posting a 9.1% increase to MAD 2.2 billion—a testament to increased transaction volumes and expanded service offerings.

Trading Activities Weigh on Overall Revenue

Despite these positive underlying trends, consolidated net banking income declined 3.2% to MAD 13.5 billion from MAD 13.9 billion in the prior-year period. BCP attributed this decrease primarily to weaker results from trading and market activities, which had delivered exceptional returns during the first half of 2025 but proved unable to sustain those elevated levels.

Bank management emphasized that the core banking business—excluding market activities—maintained solid performance throughout the semester. This resilience occurred against a backdrop of recovering Moroccan agricultural value-added and sustained domestic demand, though international uncertainty and geopolitical tensions continued to cloud the broader operating environment.

Market Context and Outlook

The results underscore the challenge facing Moroccan banks in 2026: maintaining growth momentum while navigating volatile capital markets and an uncertain global landscape. BCP's ability to grow its loan book and deposit base while expanding core revenue streams demonstrates fundamental business health, even as trading revenues normalize from exceptional prior-year levels.

Investors will be watching closely to see whether the bank can sustain this commercial momentum in the second half of the year, particularly as regional geopolitical developments and global monetary policy shifts continue to create uncertainty in financial markets.
