IMF Lowers Global Growth Forecast to 3% Amid AI Hope and Middle East Tensions

The International Monetary Fund has revised its 2026 global growth outlook downward, now expecting the world economy to expand by 3 % – a slight reduction from the April forecast. While the IMF acknowledges that rapid advances in artificial intelligence could help cushion the economic fallout of the Middle‑East war, the projection was made before the latest flare‑up of hostilities in the region.

IMF cuts 2026 global growth outlook

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) released its latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) on Wednesday, trimming the projected expansion of the global economy to 3 % in 2026. This is a modest 0.1‑percentage‑point downgrade from the April forecast.

The Fund noted that the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) could partly offset the economic fallout from the ongoing war in the Middle East. However, the growth estimate was prepared before the latest flare‑up of hostilities in the region.

Implications

A slower‑than‑expected expansion raises concerns for equity markets and risk‑on assets, as investors may reassess growth‑dependent earnings expectations.
