Nikkei 225 Ends 2025 With a 28% Surge, Closing at 50,420 Points

The Nikkei 225 finished the year on a strong note, jumping 28.1% since the start of 2025 to close at 50,420 points on December 30. The rally marks the index’s third consecutive annual gain, driven by Japan’s solid economic recovery, robust corporate earnings and easing global trade tensions, which helped offset concerns over the Bank of Japan’s gradual monetary tightening.

Tokyo, December 30, 2025 – Japan’s flagship stock index, the Nikkei 225, surged 132 points (0.25 %) on the final trading day of the year to close at 50,420 points. The gain wipes out earlier losses and lifts the annual performance to a robust 28.1 % increase since January 1.

Key drivers behind the rally

  • Economic recovery: Continued expansion in domestic demand and a rebound in export activity have re‑energized the market.
  • Corporate earnings: Major Japanese companies reported stronger‑than‑expected earnings, reinforcing investor confidence.
  • Trade tensions easing: A de‑escalation of geopolitical disputes has reduced risk premia on Japanese equities.

These positive forces helped balance growing concerns about the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) gradual policy normalization. Despite lingering cost‑push pressures and inflation that remains higher than initially forecast, the market remained resilient.

The Japanese markets will reopen on Monday, January 5, 2026.
