President Donald Trump has announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, set to begin at 5 PM Washington time (9 PM GMT). This announcement comes after what Trump described as "excellent conversations" with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated that both leaders have agreed to the ceasefire to achieve peace between their nations. He further mentioned that he would invite both leaders to the White House for "meaningful discussions" aimed at fostering a lasting peace.
Trump has instructed his Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Army Chief of Staff Dan Caine to work with Israel and Lebanon to secure a durable peace. The ceasefire announcement was also confirmed by Hassan Fadlallah, a Hezbollah deputy in Lebanon, who noted that the group was informed by Iran's ambassador about the possibility of a short-term ceasefire starting Thursday evening.
Fadlallah indicated that Hezbollah's compliance would depend on Israel halting all forms of hostilities. This development marks a significant step towards de-escalation in the Middle East, with international attention focused on the potential for lasting peace in the region.
