The Casablanca Stock Exchange concluded Wednesday's trading session on a cautious note, with major indices posting modest movements as investor sentiment remained subdued. The benchmark MASI index retreated 0.12% to settle at 17,733.06 points, deepening its year-to-date underperformance to -5.91%.
Index Performance Reveals Mixed Sentiment
Sub-indices displayed divergent trajectories throughout the session. The MASI 20, tracking the exchange's largest capitalization stocks, edged down 0.04% to 1,284.08 points, now carrying a substantial year-to-date loss of -13.57%. The mid-cap focused MASI Mid declined more noticeably by 0.43% to 1,728.33 points, registering a -6.14% performance since January.
In contrast, the MASI ESG index, which measures companies with strong environmental, social, and governance practices, managed to buck the downward trend. It posted a marginal gain of 0.01% to reach 1,314.85 points, maintaining a positive year-to-date trajectory with a 5.06% advance—a standout performance amid broader market weakness.
Market Liquidity and Capitalization
The exchange's overall market capitalization stood at MAD 1,043.75 billion at the close. Trading volumes remained relatively thin, with total cash market turnover reaching MAD 171.71 million, all of which was transacted on the central market platform.
Top Gainers Lead Session Advances
Despite the overall cautious tone, several stocks posted impressive gains. S2M emerged as the session's strongest performer, surging 4.63% to MAD 540.00. MDP followed with a solid 4.29% advance to MAD 24.30, while MIC climbed 3.96% to MAD 787.00. ALM shares rose 3.95% to MAD 1,922.00, and MOX rounded out the top performers with a 3.93% gain to MAD 394.95.
Declining Stocks Face Pressure
On the downside, selling pressure was concentrated in several names. FBR suffered the session's steepest decline, plunging 8.22% to MAD 334.00. SNA dropped 8.06% to MAD 57.00, while ZDJ fell 6.44% to MAD 260.10. STR declined 3.41% to MAD 166.90, and CMA gave up 2.85% to settle at MAD 1,534.00.
Futures Market Activity
The derivatives segment showed varied movements across different maturities. The MASI20 FUTURE SEP26 contract traded at 1,251.50 points, up 0.36%. The December 2026 contract (MASI20 FUTURE DEC26) positioned at 1,280.40 points with a slight 0.04% decline. Further out, the March 2027 futures (MASI20 FUTURE MAR27) stood at 1,270.70 points, gaining 0.36%, while the June 2027 contract (MASI20 FUTURE JUI27) reached 1,261.10 points, also advancing 0.36%.
The session reflected ongoing investor caution as market participants continue to navigate a challenging year-to-date performance environment, with selective opportunities emerging in specific stocks even as broader indices remain under pressure.
