The Casablanca Stock Exchange experienced a consolidation session on Monday, with the main MASI index retreating 0.46% to close at 18,705.43 points. This decline follows a recent recovery period and brings the index's year-to-date performance to -0.75%.

Blue-Chip Stocks Lead the Decline

Selling pressure was particularly evident among large-cap stocks. The MASI 20, which tracks the exchange's top performers, dropped 0.92% to 1,350.12 points, extending its year-to-date losses to -9.12%. This represents a significant underperformance compared to the broader market.

In contrast, the MASI ESG index bucked the trend, advancing 0.44% to 1,386.88 points. The sustainable investing benchmark has been the standout performer this year with gains of 10.81% since January. Meanwhile, the MASI Mid index, representing mid-cap stocks, remained flat at 1,805.35 points, down 1.96% for the year.

Futures Market Mirrors Cash Session Weakness

The derivatives market reflected the downward momentum seen in spot trading. MASI 20 futures contracts across various maturities closed lower:

  • June 2027 contract: -0.94% at 1,343.10 points
  • March 2027 contract: -0.92% at 1,345.30 points
  • September 2026 contract: -0.78% at 1,349.80 points
  • December 2026 contract: -0.92% at 1,347.30 points

Market Outlook

Monday's session represented a pause in the market's recent recovery trajectory. The disproportionate weakness in blue-chip stocks suggests profit-taking by institutional investors, while mid-cap stability indicates selective investor interest. The futures market's alignment with spot market trends confirms the near-term cautious sentiment across market participants.
