Anthropic Eyes Wall Street Debut: AI Giant Plans Major IPO Despite Massive Losses

Anthropic is positioning itself for a blockbuster Wall Street debut that could value the AI startup at over $2 trillion, according to IPO documents reviewed by Reuters. The company's prospectus reveals explosive revenue growth—jumping 12-fold to $4.6 billion last year—but also staggering losses of $42 billion and plans to invest $518 billion in cloud infrastructure. The filing underscores Anthropic's bold bet that artificial intelligence will reshape the global economy more profoundly than industrialization, electricity, or the internet, setting the stage for a high-stakes race with rival OpenAI for AI market dominance.

Artificial intelligence pioneer Anthropic is preparing for what could become one of the most significant initial public offerings in tech history, with a potential valuation exceeding $2 trillion for the five-year-old company, according to IPO filing documents obtained by Reuters.

The prospectus lays out Anthropic's ambitious vision: that artificial intelligence will transform the global economy more fundamentally than the industrial revolution, electrification, or the internet itself. But this transformation comes at an extraordinary cost.

Staggering Losses and Massive Investment Plans

Financial disclosures in the filing reveal the scale of Anthropic's current operations and its aggressive growth strategy. The company recorded a net loss of $42 billion last year, while simultaneously planning to spend approximately $518 billion on cloud computing resources and infrastructure in the coming year.

Despite these losses, Anthropic demonstrated explosive revenue growth, with annual revenues surging twelvefold to reach nearly $4.6 billion. However, operating losses exceeded $8 billion, excluding depreciation of various liabilities primarily related to previous fundraising rounds.

Infrastructure Investment Acceleration

In 2025, the AI laboratory spent $7.33 billion on computing resources and infrastructure—triple the amount spent in 2024. This represented more than half of its total operating expenses of $12.65 billion, underscoring the capital-intensive nature of cutting-edge AI development.

As of December 31, Anthropic maintained a strong liquidity position with cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments totaling $20.28 billion, providing runway for its ambitious expansion plans.

The Battle for AI Supremacy

Anthropic's primary competitor remains OpenAI, with both companies engaged in fierce competition to attract enterprise clients, top-tier talent, and regulatory influence in Washington. OpenAI filed a confidential IPO application in June, with media reports suggesting a public debut in early 2027.

Financial analysts anticipate that whichever company goes public first will establish crucial valuation benchmarks for the AI sector and attract investors who have been waiting years for a pure-play opportunity in artificial intelligence technology.

The race to Wall Street represents more than just a funding milestone—it's a contest to define the financial metrics and investor expectations for the entire AI industry as it enters a new phase of maturity and mainstream adoption.
