Brent Crude Slides Below $72 Amid Growing Supply Pressure

Brent crude fell below the $72 per barrel threshold on Monday, reaching its lowest level since late February. The decline is linked to a gradual return of oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz and the announcement that OPEC+ members will modestly increase their production quotas. Nine OPEC+ countries, headed by Saudi Arabia and Russia, agreed to add 188,000 barrels per day, while Gulf producers such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE are boosting exports back toward pre‑war levels. The market now sees excess‑supply risk outweighing the geopolitical risk premium that previously supported prices.

Brent Crude Slides Below $72

On Monday, Brent crude fell below the $72 per barrel mark, edging toward its lowest price since late February. The slide is driven by a gradual normalisation of oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz and expectations of a modest production increase from OPEC+.

OPEC+ production increase: The alliance approved a slight rise in the collective output quota for the coming month. Nine members, led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, agreed to boost production by 188,000 barrels per day. This signals confidence that the market can absorb additional volumes as the situation in the Middle East stabilises.

Supply from Gulf producers: Saudi export volumes are returning toward pre‑war levels, and the United Arab Emirates, which left OPEC during the conflict, have resumed deliveries.

Traffic of oil tankers and methanol carriers in the Strait of Hormuz showed signs of normalisation on Sunday after unexplained detours the previous day, reinforcing the view that supply pressures are re‑emerging.

With supply concerns now outweighing the geopolitical risk premium that previously buoyed prices, the market is shifting its focus toward the risk of excess supply.

  • Brent price: under $72 per barrel
  • OPEC+ production boost: +188,000 bpd
  • Key contributors: Saudi Arabia, Russia, UAE
  • Strategic route: Strait of Hormuz
