SBM Completes 33.33% Stake Acquisition in Africa Retail Market, Boosting Morocco’s Hyper U Distribution

The Société des Boissons du Maroc (SBM) has closed its purchase of a one‑third stake in Africa Retail Market, the exclusive Moroccan distributor of Hyper U, Super U and U Express brands. The deal, amounting to a 33.33 % share following a capital increase reserved for SBM, received the green light of the Competition Council on 1 April 2026, clearing all suspensive conditions. Africa Retail Market now operates eight outlets across the kingdom – five supermarkets and three hypermarkets – under the Hyper U family of brands, positioning both SBM and the retailer for accelerated growth in the country’s fast‑moving consumer goods sector.

SBM Secures One‑Third Ownership of Africa Retail Market

The Société des Boissons du Maroc (SBM) announced today that it has completed the acquisition of a 33.33 % stake in Africa Retail Market, the sole Moroccan distributor of the Hyper U, Super U and U Express retail chains.

The transaction follows the signing of a share subscription agreement earlier this year, which earmarked a capital increase exclusively for SBM. All suspensive conditions—most notably the approval of the Competition Council on 1 April 2026—have now been fulfilled.

What This Means for the Retail Landscape

With eight operating locations—a mix of five supermarkets and three hypermarkets—Africa Retail Market currently serves a broad customer base across Morocco under the Hyper U banner. The new partnership provides SBM with a strategic foothold in the fast‑moving consumer goods (FMCG) distribution channel, potentially accelerating revenue growth and cross‑selling opportunities.

  • Geographic reach: Eight stores covering major Moroccan cities.
  • Brand portfolio: Hyper U, Super U and U Express.
  • Strategic impact: Enhanced distribution network for SBM’s beverage portfolio.

Industry observers expect the alliance to deepen the presence of international retail concepts in Morocco and to spur competitive dynamics in the FMCG sector.
