French Markets Stumble on Budget Uncertainty While Wall Street Shows Mixed Signals
European equities showed divergent performance on Monday, with French markets underperforming significantly due to concerns over the government's 2027 budget proposal. While German and British indices posted gains, the CAC 40 declined amid widening French-German bond yield spreads. U.S. markets are expected to open with minimal movement as investors digest mixed economic signals and await central bank decisions on both sides of the Atlantic.

European stock markets displayed mixed performance during Monday's mid-session trading, with French equities notably lagging behind their regional peers as budgetary concerns weighed heavily on investor sentiment.
Divergent Market Performance
U.S. futures indicated a cautious opening for Wall Street, with the Dow Jones futures down 0.11%, S&P 500 futures marginally up 0.02%, and Nasdaq futures slipping 0.01%. In contrast, European markets showed varied trajectories around 11:27 GMT.
The Paris CAC 40 declined 0.64% to 7,846.45 points, underperforming its European counterparts. Meanwhile, Frankfurt's Dax climbed 0.27% and London's FTSE 100 advanced 0.53%. The broader EuroStoxx 50 edged up 0.03%, while the FTSEurofirst 300 gained 0.48% and the Stoxx 600 rose 0.46%.
French Budget Uncertainty Takes Center Stage
French markets faced significant headwinds stemming from uncertainty surrounding the government's 2027 budget proposal unveiled last week. The proposed plan, which includes €43 billion in spending cuts, has raised serious questions about parliamentary approval prospects.
This political uncertainty has contributed to a widening spread between French and German bond yields, reflecting increased risk premium demanded by investors for French sovereign debt. Credit rating agency Moody's delivered a pessimistic assessment Friday, expressing doubt that parliamentary consensus could be reached on the fiscal package.
Antoine Fraysse-Soulier, head of market analysis at eToro, noted that while the CAC 40's composition and its companies' international operations partially explain performance differences with other indices, French budgetary tensions add a fragility factor. Investors are questioning the implications of public account corrections on future corporate earnings.
Economic Data Provides Mixed Signals
Investors also digested final Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) data for the eurozone, which showed private sector activity growth in September reached its highest level in three and a half years. This positive economic indicator suggests resilience in the European economy despite various challenges.
Preliminary inflation data for the eurozone showed no underlying effects from the energy price surge, reducing expectations for further rate hikes by the European Central Bank (BCE). According to LSEG data, markets are pricing in a 79% probability that the ECB will maintain current rates at its upcoming late-October meeting.
U.S. Employment Data Influences Fed Expectations
Across the Atlantic, Friday's U.S. employment report revealed job creation fell significantly short of expectations. This weaker-than-anticipated data has reinforced market bets (81% probability) that the Federal Reserve will maintain its current policy stance at its next meeting.
The convergence of robust eurozone growth data, subdued inflation pressures, and disappointing U.S. job numbers has created a complex backdrop for investors navigating monetary policy expectations on both continents.
