European Shares Rally After Trump Calls Off Tariff Threat

European equity markets jumped on Thursday as U.S. President Donald Trump scrapped the extra‑tariff plan he had threatened against several EU nations over the Greenland dispute. The CAC 40, FTSE 100 and DAX all posted gains of around 1 %, while broader indices such as the Euro‑Stoxx 50 and STOXX 600 also rose, easing concerns in the defence sector though French group Thales slipped modestly.

Market Overview

European equity markets opened sharply higher on Thursday morning as U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew his previously announced extra‑tariff measures against several EU countries that had opposed his proposal to assert control over Greenland.

In Paris, the CAC 40 surged 1.13 % to 8,160.12 points by 08:45 GMT. London’s FTSE 100 climbed 0.74 %, while Frankfurt’s DAX added 1.27 %.

The broader Euro‑Stoxx 50 rose 1.09 %, the FTSEurofirst 300 gained 1.05 % and the STOXX 600 advanced 1.03 %.

Sector Impact

The de‑escalation of the Greenland dispute, which had rattled the defence‑related segment, eased pressure on European defence firms. Nonetheless, French defence giant Thales saw its share price dip about 1.5 % amid the lingering uncertainty.
