Casablanca Stock Exchange Edges Higher But Lacks Conviction as Divergent Sectors Weigh on Sentiment

The Casablanca Stock Exchange posted modest gains on Wednesday, with the benchmark MASI index climbing 0.13% to close at 18,836.75 points. Despite the uptick, market performance remains unconvincing as divergent sector movements reveal underlying fragility. Wednesday's trading session at the Casablanca Stock Exchange delivered a mixed picture, with the main MASI index gaining 0.13% to reach 18,836.75 points. The modest advance extends the index's recent recovery trajectory, though year-to-date performance remains marginally negative at -0.05%, underscoring the market's struggle to establish clear directional momentum.

Divergent Performance Across Market Segments

The session revealed significant divergence among the exchange's key indices. The blue-chip MASI 20 index slipped 0.08% to 1,356.77 points, deepening its year-to-date decline to -8.67%. This weakness among large-cap stocks contrasted sharply with strength elsewhere in the market.

The MASI ESG index, tracking companies with strong environmental, social, and governance practices, posted a solid 0.40% gain to close at 1,402.58 points. This index continues to outperform the broader market significantly, maintaining a robust year-to-date advance of 12.07%.

Mid-cap stocks also showed resilience, with the MASI Mid index advancing 0.23% to 1,813.90 points. Despite the positive session, this segment remains down 1.50% for the year, performing better than large caps but trailing the ESG-focused names.

Futures Market Signals Caution

Futures contracts on the MASI 20 reflected investor caution, with all tracked maturities trading in negative territory. The June 2027 contract declined 0.07% to 1,351 points, while the March 2027, September 2026, and December 2026 contracts each fell 0.08%, settling at 1,352, 1,349.90, and 1,354 points respectively.

Trading Activity and Market Capitalization

The cash market recorded trading volume of 317.3 million dirhams, while total market capitalization stood at 1,108.34 billion dirhams at session close.

Top Gainers and Losers

Individual stock performance varied widely. Leading the advances, REB surged 5.99% to 98.73 dirhams, followed by ALM which climbed 4.09% to 1,859 dirhams. ZDJ appreciated 3.33% to 308.95 dirhams, while DWY added 3.21% to reach 753 dirhams. Rounding out the top performers, S2M gained 2.69% to close at 534 dirhams.

On the downside, BAL suffered the session's steepest decline, plunging 5.95% to 188 dirhams. ATH retreated 3.63% to 66.40 dirhams, and CMA shed 2.20% to 1,691 dirhams. CRS declined 1.96% to 22 dirhams, while STR completed the list of biggest losers with a 1.91% drop to 177.55 dirhams.

The divergent performance across market segments suggests investors are becoming increasingly selective, favoring ESG-compliant and mid-cap names while showing less enthusiasm for traditional large-cap stocks. This rotation dynamic bears watching as the market seeks to establish sustainable momentum.
