MASI Index Extends Year-to-Date Losses
As of 10:27 AM local time, the benchmark MASI index had slipped 0.18% to settle at 18,750.83 points, down from the previous closing level of 18,785.39 points. This decline extends the index's year-to-date losses to 0.51%, signaling continued pressure on Morocco's equity market.
Insurance Sector Under Pressure
Leading the decliners, Sanlam Maroc suffered the session's steepest drop, plunging 4.65% to trade at 2,850 dirhams. The insurance company's sharp decline weighed significantly on overall market sentiment. Mining conglomerate Managem also retreated, losing 1.11% to reach 1,780 dirhams.
Technology and Construction Stocks Rally
Against the prevailing downward trend, several stocks posted impressive gains. Microdata emerged as the top performer, surging 2.52% to 768.90 dirhams. Automotive distributor Auto Hall advanced 1.89% to 67.50 dirhams, while cement manufacturer LafargeHolcim Maroc climbed 1.70% to 1,790 dirhams.
Banking Sector Shows Resilience
Morocco's major banking stocks demonstrated relative stability during the session. Banque Centrale Populaire (BCP) edged up 0.79% to 249.95 dirhams, while Attijariwafa Bank posted a marginal gain of 0.07% to reach 707 dirhams. Meanwhile, Bank of Africa, BMCI, and CIH Bank traded flat, showing no movement from their opening prices.
The mixed performance across sectors suggests investors are adopting a selective approach, with technology and industrial stocks finding favor while insurance faces selling pressure.
